Nevada Completes Three-Game Sweep

The University of Nevada (21-20) baseball team defeated CSU Bakersfield (8-29) 13-6 on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park to complete a three-game nonconference series sweep of the Roadrunners. With the win the Wolf Pack moved to 21-20 on the season which marks the first time since opening day the team has a winning record. The loss dropped CSUB, a first-year program, to 8-29.

The Roadrunners scored first with a run in the top of the second inning when third baseman Martin Medina’s sacrifice fly scored first baseman Richard Escalera after three consecutive singles to start the inning loaded the bases. An outstanding defensive play by Pack first baseman Shaun Kort cut down a runner at the plate and pop up also to Kort kept the ‘Runners from adding to their lead.

In the bottom of the second inning Nevada took advantage of a CSUB error to score three runs. Designated hitter Nick Melino singled up the middle to start the inning and right fielder Brett Hart’s fly ball to right field was dropped putting runners at second and third base. Catcher Travis Simas’ ground ball to second base scored Melino with the tying run and second baseman Joe Kohan’s RBI single plated Hart with the go ahead run. Kohan eventually scored on an infield single by left fielder Matt Bowman to put the Pack in front 3-1.

The Pack scored the next eight runs with three runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to lead 11-1. CSUB scored five times in the top of the seventh inning off two Pack relievers to make the score 11-6. In the bottom of the seventh inning Nevada took advantage of another dropped fly ball to score two more runs and make the final score 13-6.

Nevada starter Derek Achelpohl (4-3) won his fourth game of the season allowing one run on six hits in six innings on the mound. Mickey Jannis (0-7) lost his seventh game of the season giving up 10 runs, six earned in his five innings of action.

Left fielder Matt Bowman (4-for-5,2R,2RBI) finished with a game-high four hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair. Melino (3-for-4,2R,RBI) added three hits while Hart (2-for-4,R,RBI), second baseman Joe Kohan (2-for-4,2R,RBI) and shortstop Kevin Rodland (2-for-4,2R,RBI) added two each as the team totaled 17 on the day. Bowman and Simas finished with two RBI apiece.

Center fielder Westley Moss’ RBI single in the fourth inning extended his career-high hit streak to 10-games. Third baseman Tyson Jaquez was hitless on the day which snapped his career and team season-high hit streak at 12 games.

Right fielder Ryan McIntyre (2-for-4,RBI) and shortstop Kyle Richardson (2-for-3) had two hits each to lead the ‘Runners. Five different CSUB hitters drove in a run in the game.

The Pack will close out its 12-game home stand on Tuesday hosting UC Davis at 6:00 p.m.
