Bowman Ties Career Doubles Record in Wolf Pack Win

University of Nevada (20-20) senior Matt Bowman tied Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay with 62 career doubles in the Wolf Pack’s 9-4 victory over Cal State University Bakersfield today at Peccole Park. Overbay (1996-99) set the Nevada mark playing in 209 games during his four seasons at Nevada while Bowman has played in 198 games during his time in the Silver & Blue.

With today’s victory the Pack evened their season mark at 20-20 while the Roadrunners dropped to 8-28. Nevada won Friday’s contest 7-6 over the first year program of CSUB and will look to make it three in a row tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

Nevada scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump in front 2-0. Center fielder Westley Moss singled and moved around to third base on two stolen bases. First baseman Shaun Kort delivered an RBI single and eventually came around to score the second run of the inning on right fielder Brett Hart’s double off the center field fence.

A wind blown infield single off the bat of CSUB first baseman Richard Escalera with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning scored a pair of Roadrunners to tie the game at 2-2.

A three-run bottom of the fourth inning put the Wolf Pack in front 5-2. Bowman drove in two with his record tying 62nd career double and came around to score on Kort’s single. Shortstop Kevin Rodland’s double in the bottom of the fifth inning scored second baseman Joe Kohan who reached on a fielders choice to score the Pack’s sixth run of the game.

Two bases loaded walks in the bottom of the seventh inning scored a pair of runs for the Pack to make the score 8-2. Hart doubled with one down in the eighth inning, moved to third base on a wild pitch where he scored on Kohan’s sacrifice fly.

CSUB got a two-RBI single from center fielder Joey Mills in the top of the ninth inning with two down to make the final score 9-4.

Nevada starter Chris Garcia (3-4) allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out seven in 7.1 innings to earn his third victory of the season. CSUB starter Jonathan Montoya (3-4) lost his fourth decision of the season giving up six runs on 10 hits in six innings on the mound.

Hart (3-for-4,R,RBI) and Kohan (3-for-4,R,RBI) set career-highs with a game-high three hits and drove in a run each. Kort (2-for-3,R,RBI) finished with two hits and a game-high three RBI. Bowman also drove in two with his record setting double. Jaquez extended his career and team season-high hit streak to 12 games while Moss’ career long hit streak has reached nine games.

‘Runners third baseman JJ Henry (2-for-4,R) topped CSUB with two hits while Mills and Escalera led the squad with two RBI apiece.
