Senior Michelle Beach went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs as the Wolf Pack closed out the 2009 season at Hixson Park with a 6-2 win over Utah State on Senior Day.
Nevada completed a three-game sweep of the Aggies and improved to 33-14 overall and 13-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. Utah State fell to 10-35 and 3-15. The Wolf Pack leads the Western Athletic Conference standings and the team’s magic number is down to three.
Nevada closed out the home part of its schedule with a 17-1 record at Hixson Park.
Katie Holverson tossed a complete game two-hitter to earn the win and improve to 21-7 on the season and 10-1 in WAC play.
The Wolf Pack jumped on top in the second inning when Sam Bias slammed her eighth home run of the season over the fence in left-center.
Brittany Puzey has now reached base safely in 26 straight games and in 45 of the Pack’s 47 games after she walked in the third inning. She promptly stole second, the 14th theft of the season for the senior. Puzey is now tied for the school record in single-season stolen bases with Kym Silagyi (2007) and Jiliane Hartfiel (2004).
With Puzey on third, Bias singled to give Nevada a 2-0 lead.
After Utah State tied it in the fourth inning, Nevada took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Britton Murdock walked with the bases loaded.
Nevada extended the lead to 5-2 with RBI singles from Beach and Noelle Micka. The Pack made it 6-2 with another RBI single from Beach in the sixth.
The Wolf Pack will conclude the regular season next week at San Jose State.
The WAC Tournament is May 6-9 in Fresno, Calif.
