Sean Avery is being benched for Game 5 of the New York Rangers' first-round playoff series against the Washington Capitals.
The noted agitator is listed as New York's only scratch Friday night.
Avery was called for two penalties in the final 10 minutes of New York's 2-1 victory in Game 4 on Wednesday, forcing the Rangers to kill off power plays while nursing a lead.
He bloodied Capitals defenseman Milan Jurcina with a shot to the face, then high-sticked defenseman Brian Pothier.
In Game 3, Washington's only win through the first four games, Avery took four minor penalties and a misconduct.
