Nevada Sweeps Doubleheader over La Tech

The University of Nevada (14-15, 3-0 WAC) baseball team completed a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Louisiana Tech (12-12, 0-3 WAC) with a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, La. The Wolf Pack won Saturday’s first game 11-7 and Friday’s single game 8-5 which will give them the series victory with one game remaining on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The win improved the Pack to 3-0 in WAC play and 14-15 overall. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-3 in conference play and 12-12 on the season.

La Tech shortstop Ashton Hughes started the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to stake the Bulldogs to a 1-0 advantage. The Pack got a two-RBI double from center fielder Westley Moss in the top of third inning that scored second baseman Nick Lead and catcher Michael Turay after they both singled to reach base to put Nevada on top 2-1.

The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Pack third baseman Tyson Jaquez singled home left fielder Matt Bowman and first baseman Shaun Kort to make the score 4-1. Bowman reached and a single and Kort was intentionally walked for the second time in the game.

The Bulldogs had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh with one down but reliever Daniel Tinlin induced a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

Nevada starter Derek Achelpohl (2-3) earned his second win of the season allowing one run on eight hits in six innings on the mound. Tinlin (4) recorded his team leading fourth save pitching a scoreless seventh inning. La Tech starter Jeb Stefan (2-3) suffered the loss giving up four runs on seven hits in tossing a seven-inning complete game.

Turay (2-for-3,R) and Moss (2-for-3,R,2RBI) led the Pack with two hits. Moss and Jaquez drove in two runs each in the game.

Hughes (2-for-2,R,RBI) had two hits and drove in La Tech’s lone run in the game with his second home run of the season. Designated hitter Nate Grunewald (2-for-3) also had two hits in the game.
