Kort Hits Grand Slam in Nevada Win

University of Nevada (13-15, 2-0 WAC) junior first baseman Shaun Kort hit a grand slam as the Wolf Pack defeated Louisiana Tech (12-11, 0-2 WAC) 11-7 in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, La. The win improved the Pack to 2-0 in WAC play and 13-15 overall. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 in conference play and 12-11 on the season.

La Tech got a leadoff home run from left fielder Patrick Thomas to jump to a 1-0 lead after one inning of play but a five-run second inning put Nevada on top 5-1. Catcher Travis Simas doubled home the first two runs and center fielder Westley Moss’ single scored him. Left fielder Matt Bowman followed with his team-leading fifth home run of the season that scored two.

Bulldog third baseman Chris Kersten homered leading off the bottom of the second to score La Tech’s second run of the game. La Tech got an RBI single from second baseman Kevin Winn in the third inning to close the gap two at 5-3.

Nevada put together another five-run inning in the top of the sixth that was highlighted by Kort’s grand slam and it was 10-3. La Tech scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings to make the final score 11-7. Lefty Chris Garcia (2-3) earned his second win in a row allowing five runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings on the mound. Sammy Miller pitched the final 1.2 innings of the game to keep the Bulldogs from closing the gap. La Tech starter Jamey Bradshaw (0-2) was tagged with the loss giving up five runs on four hits in 3.2 innings of action.

Kort (3-for-5,2R,4RBI) led the Pack with three hits and four RBI. Bowman (2-for-4,2R,2RBI), second baseman Nick Leid (2-for-4,R) and Simas (2-for-3,2,2RBI) added two hits each. Bowman and Simas also drove in two runs apiece.

Thomas (4-for-5,3R,3RBI) finished with a game-high four hits and drove in three runs for La Tech. Right fielder Devon Dageford (2-for-4,RBI) and Kersten (2-for-3,2R,RBI) contributed two hits each in the game.

The final game of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
