MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Tigers say they did everything possible to keep John Calipari and though they are disappointed and
devastated he left to coach Kentucky, they are not angry.
"We lost a rock star," Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson said at a news conference Wednesday.
Johnson thanked Calipari and wished him luck at Kentucky where he is now the highest-paid coach in college basketball. Memphis had been paying Calipari $2.35 million a year under a deal signed less than a year ago.
The athletic director said they did everything possible to keep Calipari including tapping their supply of boosters. Johnson would not say how much they offered Calipari to stay.
