Nevada Wins Series 3-1 Over Utah Valley

The University of Nevada (11-14) baseball team defeated Utah Valley University (7-18) 11-7 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a four-game series at Peccole Park. With the victory the Wolf Pack won a series for the first time this season taking three-of-four games from the Wolverines. The Pack improved to 11-14 on the year while UVU dropped to 7-18.

The Pack took control early scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning on six hits. Center fielder Westley Moss singled to start the game and first baseman Shaun Kort followed with an RBI double and it was 1-0. A walk to designated hitter Brock Stassi and a single by left fielder Nick Melino loaded the bases for third baseman Tyson Jaquez. Jaquez’s single scored two runs and with two down shortstop Kevin Rodland’s single plated the fourth run of the inning.

UVU scored unearned runs in the second and third innings to close within two at 4-2. The Pack scored runs in their next five at bats with two in the third and fourth innings while single crossed the plate in the fifth, sixth and the seventh innings to open an eight-run cushion at 11-3.

The Wolverines scored four times in the top of the eighth inning and it was a four-run contest. Left fielder Kirk Doxey delivered the big blow in the inning with his three-run homer but UVU would get no closer falling 11-7.

Making his first collegiate start freshman Jayson McClaren (1-0) earned his first victory at Nevada giving up three runs, one earned on six hits in five innings on the mound. Reliever Daniel Tinlin (2) earned his second save of the weekend pitching 1.2 shutout innings. UVU starter Brock Sargent (1-5) lost for the fifth time this season allowing eight runs, seven earned in four innings of action.

Kort (4-for-5,3R,RBI) tallied a game-high four hits and three runs scored on the day. Moss (2-for-5,R,RBI), Melino (2-for-4,R,RBI), Jaquez (2-for-4,2R,2RBI), right fielder Matt Bowman (2-for-4,R,3RBI) and Rodland (2-for-4,R,RBI) added two hits apiece. Bowman tied for game-high honors with his three RBI.

UVU designated hitter Sage Thorpe (3-for-5,2R) led the Wolverines with three hits in the game. Catcher Kevin Arendse (2-for-4,R), Doxey (2-for-4,R,3RBI) and second baseman Ryan Jones (2-for-4,R,2RBI) added two hits apiece. Doxey drove in three with his third home run of the year.

Nevada closes out its five-game home stand with a single game with Saint Mary’s College on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. before taking to the road to begin Western Athletic Conference play at Louisiana Tech next weekend.
