The No. 64 Nevada men’s tennis team defeated Saint Mary’s 4-3 at Lakeridge Tennis Club on Saturday with the help of junior Gabe Kanzelmeyer.
The winning point of the match was determined by Kanzelmeyer and Steven Dawson-Roberts in No. 6 singles. After falling 5-7 in the first set, Kanzelmeyer came back to take the win 6-4, 6-2 to keep the Wolf Pack (9-3, 1-0 Western Athletic Conference) unbeaten at home this season.
In the beginning of the match, Nevada was unable to get the doubles point. However junior Alex Daruty and freshman Wessim Derbel picked up their second consecutive win together in the No. 2 doubles position, defeating Achim Christner and Andrea Zannoni 8-4.
After losing the doubles point in the beginning of the match, junior Laurent Garcin and Derbel help the Wolf Pack bounce back and take a 2-1 lead. Garcin defeated Christner 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles position and with the win he is now tied with Dave Williams (1978-82) for fourth in Nevada’s all-time career wins list with 54. Garcin also extends his win streak in singles to five. Derbel picked up his 11th win in his career by defeating Lucas Tirelli 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. Derbel also extends his win streak to six.
Daruty defeated Gavin Leon 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 position and has now set a career-high of 12 wins in a season. The win also put Nevada up ahead 3-1 but the Gaels tied the match when Zannoni defeated Augustin Myard in the No. 4 spot and Youssef El Bouzkouri defeated senior Benjamin David in the No. 5 position.
“I am so proud of the guys on how they battled today,” Nevada head coach Chad Stoloff said. “Laurent and Wessim helped us bounce back after losing the doubles point and Gabe had a hard fought victory to earn us the win.”
Nevada will conclude the weekend against Montana, which defeated Gonzaga 4-3 prior to Nevada’s match. That match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m at Lakeridge Tennis Club. Prior to the match Gonzaga will face UC Davis at 9 a.m.
