PLANT CITY, Fla. (AP) - Top Pittsburgh Pirates minor league prospect Jose Tabata says he was "shocked" to find out his wife is accused of kidnapping a baby from a Florida couple.

The 20-year-old outfielder said in a release Wednesday that he's "hurt, frustrated, and confused." His 43-year-old wife, Amalia Tabata Pereira, is accused of taking the 2-month-old girl Monday from a woman at health clinic in Plant City, east of Tampa.

Police say Pereira told the baby's parents that she was an immigration official and that they were going to be deported. Police say she offered to help but said she needed to take the baby.

She was arrested Tuesday and turned the baby over to authorities. She has been charged with interference with child custody, kidnapping and false imprisonment.
