Fresno State’s Haley Perkins and Hawai‘i’s Stephanie Ricketts have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 16-23. This is the second career honor for Perkins and the first for Ricketts.
Perkins, a senior second baseman from Fresno, Calif., led the WAC with a .667 batting average last week as Fresno State opened WAC play with a series sweep of San Jose State. In game one of the series, Perkins was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one RBI and a walk. She also had three hits in the final two games and one of the Bulldogs’ three RBI in the two shutout wins. Perkins had a hit in each of the three games on the week to extend her hitting streak to seven games, was perfect on defense and didn’t strike out once on the week. For the week, she led Fresno State in runs (3), hits (6), RBI (2), total bases (6), slugging percentage (.667) and on-base percentage (.700).
Ricketts, a freshman from San Jose, Calif., went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and threw the first no-hitter in the WAC this season as the Rainbow Wahine went 2-1 on the road at Louisiana Tech. She fired her first career no-hitter in the first game vs. the Techsters, retiring the first 12 batters before a walk became the only blemish in the scorebook. She then proceeded to retire the next nine straight for the no-hitter. In her second start of the series, Ricketts took a no-hitter through 6.2 innings before giving up a single. In the series, Ricketts threw 17.0 innings, did not surrender an earned run and gave up just three hits.
