The University of Nevada (8-12) baseball team lost the series finale 10-2 at No. 10 UC Irvine (12-6) on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. The Wolf Pack lost two of the three games in the series and stand at 8-12 on the season while the Anteaters improved to 12-6.
UCI sent 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and six scored to take a commanding 6-0 lead and the Pack were unable to recover. Catcher Ronnie Schaeffer drove in two of the runs with a two-run homer over the left field wall in the big inning. It was Schaeffer’s first hit of the season. The Eaters added single runs the next two innings and two more in the fifth to account for their 10 runs in the game.
Nevada got a solo home run from catcher Travis Simas in the fifth to score its first run of the game. In the seventh inning Michael Turay doubled after he entered the game to catch and came home on right fielder Brett Hart’s single.
Pack starter Derek Achelpohl (1-2) lost for the second time this season giving up six runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings on the mound. Crosby Slaught (2-0) won his second game of the season giving up two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of action.
Second baseman Matt Bowman (2-for-3) and Hart (2-for-3,RBI) led the Pack with two hits apiece. Simas and Hart drove in a run apiece.
Four different UCI hitters had three hits in the game. Schaeffer (3-for-4,R,2RBI) and second baseman Casey Stevenson (2-for-4,2RBI) had two RBI each for the Eaters.
Nevada will conclude its five-game road trip with a single game at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
