PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Mike Sweeney's chances of making the Seattle Mariners' roster on opening day keep improving.
Sweeney, a non-roster invitee who is attempting a comeback after
having surgery on both knees in June, had two hits and an RBI in Seattle's 8-5 win over an Oakland Athletics split squad Saturday.
"I came to camp not to just show up and have a vacation in Arizona but to make the team and have an impact," Sweeney said after raising his Cactus League average to .381. "I feel wonderful, my swing feels good. I feel great."
Ken Griffey Jr. doubled and scored twice in his second game playing left field this spring, Franklin Gutierrez homered, and Matt Tuiasosopo and Mike Morse had two RBIs apiece for Seattle.
Jack Cust went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Oakland while Travis Buck added an RBI triple.
