Nevada's Criner a Candidate for All-American Team

Senior point guard Dellena Criner was named one of four candidates in Region 7 and one if 52 national candidates for the 2009 NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and State Farm announced Tuesday.

The State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team selection committee will review these 52 candidates and cut the list to 40 finalists on Thursday, March 25. The 40 finalists will all be in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team.

Criner is one of four candidates in Region 7, along with Shanavia Dowdell of La Tech, Jene Morris of San Diego State University and Morgan Warburton of the University of Utah.

Criner ended her career at Nevada as the all-time leader in games played (124) and the all-time leader in steals (271). She is second on Nevada’s all-time list in free throws made (551), third in assists (374) and fourth in scoring (1,629). She also served as a team captain this season.

Criner led Nevada in scoring in three out of her four seasons at Nevada including averaging 14.7 points per game this year. This season she was named WAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and was also named to the All-WAC First Team for the third consecutive year. Criner is a four-time WAC Player of the Week, a three-time WAC All-Defensive Team selection, a two-time WAC All-Tournament Team honoree, a two-time Nugget Classic MVP and was the 2008-09 WAC Preseason Player of the Year.

During her career, Criner recorded 79 double-digit scoring games, 23 20-point games, three 30-point games, and three double-doubles including two this season. This season Criner helped lead Nevada to an upset victory over #7 Louisville, a program-record seven game win streak to open conference play and the Pack’s first-ever appearance in the final game of the WAC Tournament. She was also named one of 30 national candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

Criner, who is majoring in accounting, is scheduled to graduate in May.
