Tyler Lantrip threw for three touchdowns and Luke Collis tossed another as the Nevada football team held its final spring scrimmage on Saturday at Mackay Stadium.

Lantrip and Collis, both sophomores, received 100 percent of the snaps during spring as starter Colin Kaepernick sat out spring while recovering from an ankle injury. The two sophomores are vying for the backup job.

“I was really pleased with both quarterbacks,” Nevada coach Chris Ault. “From where we were 15 practices ago until now, I am very comfortable with the progress.

“Overall, we got a lot accomplished this spring and we still have got a ways to go.”

If there was a focus offensively during spring, it was expanding the passing game and the final scrimmage reflected that. The offense ran the ball fewer than 25 times in the 84-play scrimmage.

Lantrip threw for 233 yards and had three scoring strikes. He hit tight end Virgil Green on a 65-yard catch-and-run for a score. He hit Green for a 23-yard scoring strike as well. Lantrip’s third scoring pass was a 3-yarder to Malcolm Shepherd. Collis hit Shepherd for a TD as well, a 20-yarder.

“We put in more offense in this spring than in any year that I’ve been a head coach,” Ault said. “We worked a lot in the passing game and I’m pleased. And the running backs had an excellent spring, all of them.”

There were a number of defensive highlights in the scrimmage, especially early as the defense forced a punt situation in the first seven offensive series. Linebacker James-Michael Johnson led the unit with six tackles.

Dontay Moch had 1.5 sacks with Kevin Basped assisting on a sack. James-Michael Johnson also recorded a sack for the defense. Brandon Marshall had three stops, two for a loss of 8 yards.

The scrimmage concluded Nevada’s spring practice session. The Wolf Pack will begin it’s spring conditioning session later this month. Nevada opens the 2009 season Sept. 5 at Notre Dame. The Wolf Pack’s full schedule is expected to be completed by the WAC later this month.
