The University of Nevada (5-10) baseball team was shutout 3-0 by Oregon (8-7) on Saturday afternoon in game three of a four-game series being played at Peccole Park in Reno. The loss drops the Wolf Pack to 5-10 on the season while the Ducks improved to 8-7.
Oregon center fielder Caleb Tommasini hit the first pitch of the game over the left field wall to stake the Ducks to a 1-0 lead and that would be all the Ducks needed as Bennett Whitmore and Drew Gagnier combined to blank the Pack.
Back-to-back doubles by Ducks first baseman Eddy Rodriguez and catcher Mitch Karraker in the top of the fourth inning put Oregon on top 2-0. Designated hitter Paul Eshleman’s first career hit was home run in the top of the seventh over the left center field fence to make it 3-0 which proved to be the final score.
The Pack continued to struggle offensive leaving 10 runners on base after stranding 14 in Friday’s 6-5 loss. In Thursday’s 6-5 victory over the Ducks Nevada left 12 on base.
Nevada starter Chris Garcia (0-3) lost for the third time this season allowing the three runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings on the mound. Whitmore (1-2) won for the first time pitching eight shutout innings giving up seven hits and striking out eight. Gagnier (2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his second save of the season.
Second baseman Matt Bowman (2-for-5) laced a pair of doubles in the game and first baseman Shaun Kort (2-for-4) had a pair of singles to lead the Pack offensively as the totaled eight hits on the day.
Rodriguez (2-for-4,R) and Karraker (2-for-4,RBI) had two hits apiece for the Ducks. Three different Oregon hitters drove in a run in the game.
The final game of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park when the Pack will look to earn a split in the four-game series with a win.
