The University of Nevada (5-9) baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the tying run at second base but were unable complete the comeback falling 6-5 to Oregon(7-7) at Peccole Park in Reno Friday afternoon. With the loss the Wolf Pack dropped to 5-9 on the season while the Ducks improved to 7-7.

Trailing 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning the Pack scored two runs and had the tying run at second base when the game ended. Third baseman Tyson Jaquez started the rally with a single and Waylen Sing Chow came in to pinch run. Designated hitter Michael Turay followed with a single and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Left fielder Nick Melino singled home both runners to make the score 6-5. Right fielder Aaron Henry sacrificed Melino to second base as catcher Travis Simas stepped to the plate. Simas just missed a pitch and flew out deep to left field. Pinch hitter Matt Langenfield walked before second baseman Matt Bowman popped out to first base to end the game.

Oregon jumped on top with two unearned runs in the top of the third inning when first baseman Eddy Rodriguez doubled home left fielder Caleb Tommasini who reached on an error and center fielder Curtis Raulinaitis after he singled. Catcher Mitch Karraker made it 3-0 with a solo home run leading off the fourth inning.

Nevada tied the game with three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Simas doubled with one down and moved to third when center fielder Westley Moss attempted to reach on a bunt single but was called out at first base. An error on a ball hit by Bowman to third base scored Simas with the first run of the inning. Shortstop Kevin Rodland walked and first baseman Shaun Kort’s single scored Bowman to close the gap to a single run. A wild pitch advanced both runners and Jaquez then reached on catcher’s interference. A second wild pitch scored Rodland to tie the game. Turay grounded out to third to end the inning.

The Ducks regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning scoring a pair of unearned runs on one hit. With two down shortstop KC Serna reached on an error and right fielder Jett Hart followed with a home run to put Oregon on top 5-3. The Ducks scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on two hits. With one out designated hitter Josh Hogan singled and third baseman John Adamson walked. Second baseman Danny Pulfer delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 6-3. Nevada turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning but it was too late as the sixth run that scored in the ninth proved to be the difference as the Pack rally fell a run short.

Pack starter Brock Stassi (2-2) suffered the loss allowing six runs but just two were earned on 10 hits in 8.1 innings on the mound. Erik Stavert (3-1) won his third game of the year giving up three unearned runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings of action. Serna (1) moved to the mound to retire the final two hitters of the game and earn his first save at Oregon.

Turay(2-for-5,R) and Melino(2-for-4,2RBI) led the Pack with two hits each as the team totaled 10 in the game. Melino drove in a team-high.

Rodriguez(2-for-4,R,RBI), Hogan(2-for-4,2R) and Pulfer(2-for-4,RBI) had two hits each apiece for the Ducks. Rodriguez and Hart each drove in a pair on the day.

The third game of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park.
