Dwight O'Neil hit a go-ahead jumper with 21.7 seconds left and Fresno State held on to beat Hawaii 62-58 Tuesday night in the first game of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
Sylvester Seay scored 16 points and O'Neil had 14 to lead the
ninth-seeded Bulldogs (13-20), who advanced to play No. 1 seed Utah
State in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Roderick Flemings scored 18 points and Kareem Nitoto added 15
for the eighth-seeded Rainbow Warriors (13-17), who led by as many
as 11 points in the second half before faltering.
A three-point play by Flemings with 11:23 left in the game gave
Hawaii a 49-38 lead. But the Bulldogs started chipping away.
The 15-footer by O'Neil put the Bulldogs ahead 58-57, their
first lead since midway through the first half.
Mychal Ladd, who had 13 points for the Bulldogs, hit a pair of
free throws with 10.5 seconds left and Brandon Sperling hit one
more foul shot with 2.7 seconds left to seal the victory.
Hawaii led 28-23 at halftime.
