After dropping nearly 30 pounds in the offseason, Sparks high grad Randy Messenger now appears to be in the running for the Seattle Mariners closing job.

Messenger hasn't allowed an earned run in three innings. On Monday, he struck out the White Sox's Brandon Allen with a knee-high pitch on the outside corner to end the game.

It was his second straight save.
