LAS VEGAS (AP) - Representatives for mixed martial arts fighter Georges St. Pierre say claims that his corner illegally applied petroleum jelly to his body during an Ultimate Fighting Championship bout are a desperate attempt to protect the reputation of St. Pierre's opponent.

St. Pierre's cornermen sent a letter to Nevada athletic regulators on Wednesday to respond to an informal request by UFC fighter B.J. Penn's lawyer this month about UFC 94.

Philip Nurse, the cornerman accused of illegally applying the jelly, says it would have been ludicrous to grease St. Pierre in front of thousands of fans, television cameras and state athletic officials.

St. Pierre won the fight after a doctor stopped the bout in the fifth round.
