WAC Softball Weekly Awards Announced

New Mexico State’s Tiare Jennings and Louisiana Tech’s Meghan Krieg have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 16-22. This is the first honor for both players.

Jennings, a freshman second baseman from Turlock, Calif. (Pitman), led the Aggies to a 4-1 record at the UTEP Invitational last weekend. She was 9-for-17 for a .529 batting average with five homers and 18 RBI over the five games. Against Cal State Northridge, Jennings hit a two-run home run. She followed it up with a pair of bombs against the host Miners. The first was a three-run home run and the second was a leadoff homer in the top of the sixth to bring the Aggies within one run. Her final two home runs came against WAC opponent San Jose State – a two-run bomb and a three-run homer. Jennings also scored seven runs, had a double, walked twice and only struck out twice during her 17 at bats. She posted a .579 on-base percentage, a 1.471 slugging percentage, made 14 putouts and supplied five assists on the week.

Krieg, a sophomore from Sonora, Texas (Sonora), recorded a 2-0 mark with a 0.54 ERA and 20 strikeouts on the week. She worked 13.0 innings, allowing only one run on five hits and held opponents to a .116 batting average against her. In a 4-1 win over McNeese State, Krieg allowed one run on three hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters in 6.0 innings of action. In a 3-0 win over Nicholls State, she allowed only two singles while striking out nine in the complete-game shutout.

Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Michelle Moses of Fresno State hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs as the Bulldogs went 3-2 against four ranked teams at the Cathedral City Classic last week ... Hawai‘i’s Tanisha Milca of Hawai‘i hit .357 with two multi-hit games as the Rainbow Wahine went 1-3 on the week ... Amberly Waits of Louisiana Tech hit .615 with eight hits, three doubles, seven RBI and four walks as the Techsters went 4-2 on the week ... San Jose State’s Brittany McConnell set the SJSU career mark for RBI (119) and tied the career mark for home runs (27) as the Spartans went 1-4 on the week.

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Aubray Zell of Boise State went 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA and 10 strikeouts at the San Diego Tournament ... Fresno State’s Mackenzie Oakes picked up her second complete-game victory over No. 20 North Carolina, striking out seven batters ... Kim Watson of New Mexico State led the Aggies to a trio of run-rule victories and posted a 0.47 ERA with 14 strikeouts on the week.
