Mallary Darby notched her second-straight impressive performance as the freshman shut down Portland State en route to an 11-2 Nevada victory Saturday afternoon at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.

Nevada split its two games on the day after falling to Louisville 3-2 in the first game of the day. The Wolf Pack (6-2) will complete play in the tournament on Sunday against UNLV at 3:45 p.m.

In the win over the Vikings, Darby gave up five hits and walked two while striking out seven. In 13 innings this weekend, Darby has fanned 22 batters.

Nevada wasted no time getting on the board against the Vikings. The Wolf Pack scored four in the top of the first inning on four hits and a pair of walks.

Britton Murdock got the Pack going with a two-run single and that was followed by a Sam Bias RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Michelle Beach.

The Nevada lead moved to 7-0 after the top of the third as senior Sarah Hunt crushed a three-run home run, her first of the year, to put the Pack firmly in control of the game.

Meanwhile, Darby was in control. Through the first three innings, she allowed just one hit and struck out five. She threw 37 pitches with 29 strikes in the first three innings.

The Pack went up 9-0 in the fourth inning as Brittany Puzey roped an RBI triple and then scored on Murdock’s single – the sophomore’s third RBI of the day.

Portland State got on the board in the fourth as Jenna Rauch singled and Brandi Scoggins doubles to put two on with one out. Rauch scored on a groundout and Scoggins scored on a wild pitch to cut Nevada’s lead to 9-2.

But the Pack pushed across two in the sixth inning to go up 11-2 and win by the eight-run rule. Beach slammed a two-run single in the sixth that proved to be the game-clincher.

Murdock, Beach and Hunt each drove in three runs on the day while Murdock, Starr and Bias each collected two hits in the game.
