Maria Riesch of Germany has won the slalom at the world championships, while Lindsey Vonn fell after deciding to compete despite cutting her thumb on a broken champagne bottle this week.
Riesch timed 1 minute, 51.80 seconds Saturday over two runs down
the steep Face de Bellevarde course.
Vonn had won two golds at worlds for the U.S. She cut her thumb
while celebrating a win on Monday, and required surgery. She used a
brace on her hand and was second after the opening run.
Defending champion Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic
finished second. Tanja Poutiainen of Finland was third.
