Southern Conference Cutting Costs

The Southern Conference is feeling the effects of the economic downturn.

The league plans to reduce the number of schools participating
in several SoCon tournaments, cut baseball series from three days
to two and not stage preseason gatherings in football and men's
basketball next season.

Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino estimated the
measures would save about $120,000 in the 2009-10 academic year.

In baseball, league series will require a doubleheader on one
day. Also, only four of the league's participating teams will make
conference tournaments in men's and women's soccer, men's and
women's tennis and volleyball.

Iamarino said the league will review the moves next January.
