Julia Mancuso is so frustrated, she's skipping the downhill at worlds.
Mancuso veered off the course in disgust during the downhill of
the super-combi race at the world championships on Friday.
Trailing the leader by nearly 2 seconds, Mancuso headed off
course within sight of the finish line and came to a stop to pause
for reflection. The Olympic giant slalom champion hasn't won a race
in nearly two years, bothered by a bad back and equipment changes.
The skier from Olympic Valley, Calif., didn't go to the finish
area to speak with reporters.
"Her mind has an intention but the body can't seem to translate
that," Mancuso's manager, Stephan Boeker, told The Associated
At the last worlds in 2007, Mancuso won the silver medal in
super-combi in Are, Sweden.
This year, she fell but was uninjured in the super-G that opened
the championships on Tuesday. By skipping the downhill, Mancuso can
focus on regaining her form for the giant slalom next week.
