Nik Raivio scored 27 points and Portland extended its best start in West Coast Conference history with an 84-66 victory over No. 22 St. Mary's on Saturday.
Portland (15-7, 6-1) moved into a second-place tie in the
conference with St. Mary's (18-3, 5-2), with both teams chasing No.
20 Gonzaga. The Pilots, winners of six straight, host the Bulldogs
on Thursday night.
St. Mary's was playing without leading scorer Patrick Mills, who
broke two bones in his hand during a loss Thursday night at
Gonzaga. Without their best player, the Gaels couldn't answer the
hot shooting of Portland, which connected at a 69 percent clip
(18-of-26) from the field.
Omar Samhan scored 10 of his first 14 points in the first half
for St. Mary's, which built a 21-12 lead before things fell apart.
Portland used a 24-8 run to end the first half.
