KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Just minutes after reports surfaced that the Chiefs fired coach Herm Edwards, new information has come to light that the club is looking at replacing him with former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

The Chiefs have been in negotiations to land Shanahan as their next coach and a deal is near, league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Shanahan was let go by Denver after the Broncos lost their final three games of the season costing them a shot at the playoffs.

He led the Broncos to Super Bowl wins in 1998 and 1999.
