Stanford to Cut Sports Budget

Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby says he expects a "large number" of cuts coming in the department to deal with a projected $5 million in lost revenue over the next three years.

Bowlsby says the shortfall is because of lower endowment
earnings. He didn't specify what reductions might be necessary, but
he told coaches and athletic department officials yesterday that
staff cuts, travel reductions are possible. Eliminating teams is
the last resort.

Stanford has one of the nation's biggest athletic departments
with 35 varsity sports - 19 for women, 15 for men and one coed
squad.
