Notre Dame finally addressed the rumor that the Fghting Irish are interested in hiring Jon Gruden. Notre Dame's reply: Not true.
Brian Hardin, Notre Dame's director of football media relations, said quote:
"It's ridiculous that this rumor has even gained the traction it has over the past few days. I hesitate to respond because by dignifying this 'report." I set myself up to be forced to set the record straight on future rumors."
Gruden was fired on Friday after spending the last seven seasons as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs lost their final four games this season; missing the playoffs for the fourth time in six years.
The New York Daily News ran a story last weekend that Notre Dame was considering buying out head coach Charlie Weis' contract in order to replace him with Gruden.
Weis has led the Irish to a 10-15 overall record the last two seasons. It's the worst two-year mark in Notre Dame's storied history.
They finished the year at 7-6 overall, which included a win over Hawai'i in the Hawaii Bowl.
Weis is 29-21 in his first four seasons at Notre Dame. He has seven years remaining on a 10-year contract he signed in 2005.
