LOGAN, Utah – The University of Nevada women’s basketball team won its third straight WAC game to remain undefeated in WAC play, beating Utah State 56-49 Wednesday night in Logan, Utah.
With the win Nevada improves to 9-7 overall (3-0 WAC) while Utah State fell to 7-10 overall (1-3 WAC). This win marks the second consecutive season that the Pack has opened WAC play 3-0 as Nevada also started the 2007-08 WAC season 3-0.
Nevada opened the game with a 4-0 lead and held Utah State scoreless until the 15:23 mark when the Aggies recorded their first goal of the game. The Pack went ahead 9-5 after a three-point play by Dellena Criner with 13:36 remaining.
Utah State went on a 10-2 run and took a 15-11 lead with 7:15 remaining in the first half. The Pack tied the game at 15-15 on a fast-break layup from Criner but the Aggies went on an 8-0 run to end the half and were up 26-19 at halftime.
Moore led the Pack with 10 points in the first half while Criner scored five. As a team the Pack shot 34.9 percent (8-of-23) from the floor in the first half.
Johnna Ward’s fast-break layup tied the game at 30-30 with 14:50 remaining in the game and Criner’s layup on the Pack’s next possession put Nevada ahead 32-30. Criner recorded a steal on the play leading to her layup. The steal was the 238th steal of Criner’s career which gave her sole possession of first place in the Pack’s career record book.
Franklin’s layup gave Nevada a 48-42 lead with 4:40 left to play and the Pack increased its lead to 10, 52-42, with 3:28 remaining on Criner’s layup.
After the Utah State game, Jones has now recorded 993 career points. If Jones reaches 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds, she would become the seventh player in history to record at least 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds.
Criner led Nevada with 22 points while Moore added 12. Jones and Franklin led Nevada with a team-high nine rebounds each. As a team, the Pack shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) in the game.
Nevada will play at Hawai`i on Saturday at 4 p.m. HT.
