Nevada 3rd at WAC Cross Country Championship

The University of Nevada cross country team had four runners finish in the top-20 including three in the top-10 the Pack finished third overall at the 2008 WAC Championships held Saturday morning at New Mexico State Golf Course. The race featured 69 finishers from the nine WAC teams.

Three Nevada runners, Amanda Moreno, Christa Avena and Jordan Burke, earned first team All-WAC honors for finishing in fifth, sixth and seventh respectively in the 5K race. Finishers one through seven earn first-team All-WAC honors.

In addition, Burke was named Freshman of the Year as the top freshman finisher in the race. This year marks the second consecutive year Nevada has had the Freshman of the Year as Samantha Davis was named Freshman of the Year in 2007.

As a team, Utah State won the team title with 48 points followed by Idaho (66 points), Nevada (70 points), New Mexico State (87 points), Boise State (115 points), San Jose State (154 points), Fresno State (168 points), Hawai`i (231 points) and La Tech (283 points).

Nevada finished in the fifth, sixth and seventh spots in the race. Amanda Moreno was the Pack's top finisher, coming in fifth overall with a time of 18:38.80, followed by Christa Avena in sixth (18:49.30) and Jordan Burke in seventh (18:49.50).

Janet Martinez finished 20th overall with a time of 19:13.40. Tiffany Tandy finished in 33rd (19:46.90) followed by Natalia Jarawka (39th, 20:11.40), Katie Avena (44th, 20:24.20), Christy Works (51st, 20:54.00) and Kara LaPoint (60th, 21:59.10).

Idaho's Allix Lee-Painter won the individual title with a time of 18:00.20, 25 seconds over the second-place finisher Breanna Sande of Boise State (18:25.80).
