Eight years ago, they were one in the same, but since the opening of North Valleys High School, the rivalry between the Panthers and Hug Hawks has become an intense one...with the Valley Cup emerging as a symbol for bragging rights between the two schools.
Friday night was the seventh time the two schools hooked up for the trophy. Last year, the Hawks reclaimed it and on Friday they made sure they'd keep it by beating North Valleys 22-0. It's the sixth time Hug has won the trophy.
The rivalry began when North Valleys High School first opened. Coaches say when that happened several kids from Hug including football players jumped ship to represent the Panthers.
Hawks coach Rollin Stallworth was there when it all started and says the Valley Cup is nice, but it's what it signifies that keeps his players motivated.
"It's more of a symbol than the trophy itself. That's what we play for and our kids take a lot of pride in it."
