The second scrimmage of preseason camp was a little more even, with highlights from both the offense and the defense. But overall, the defense came away with the upper hand again.
Quarterbacks Nick Graziano and Colin Kaepernick each had a long touchdown pass as the Wolf Pack offense made some strides from last week’s performance. But the Nevada defense, the blue shirts, put up another strong performance.
“The white (offense) got better today but the blue did another good job,” head coach Chris Ault said. “That defense gave up a couple of big plays but I like what they did out there today again. They got after it.”
Sophomore defensive end Dontay Moch had a stellar day with 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for a loss as part of an eight-tackle performance. Overall, the defense recorded nine sacks and 15 overall tackles for loss.
Offensively, the Pack focused a little more on the passing game with fewer than 30 running plays in the mix on Saturday. Courtney Randall and Vai Taua got the bulk of the carries with a combined 15 carries for 32 yards.
Junior Nick Graziano had a strong performance in the pistol, hitting senior Marko Mitchell with a beautiful 54-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown and nailing redshirt freshman Shane Anderson for a 50-yard gain on another post route. He finished with 143 yards on 6-of-15 passing and the touchdown to Mitchell.
Sophomore Colin Kaepernick started slow but came on later in the scrimmage. He had 88 yards on 10-of-23 passing with a 31-yard strike to Brian Fludd for a touchdown.
The scrimmage was followed by the annual FanFest event at Mackay Stadium. This marked the final public scrimmage for the Pack during preseason camp.
Nevada will open the 2008 season in two weeks on Aug. 30 as Grambling State comes to Mackay Stadium.
