Saddle bronc rider Billy Etbauer started his season off right winning the Houston Rodeo and $60,000.
He jumped to the top of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Crusher World Standings and has remained there since the March rodeo. Etbauer has over $78,000 in earnings so far this year and is hoping to add to that at the Reno Rodeo.
After his first ride here on Tuesday night, he is likely to do just that. He rode the Flying Five Rodeo horse named Spring Blues for 89 points and is currently leading the first round of competition. Spring Blues is an eight-year-old mare raised by the Hutsell family from Ritzeville, Wash. Her sire is Spring Break, a full brother to Spring Fling, one of the most decorated bucking horses in the PRCA.
“We like her,” Don Hutsell said. “She’s bred to be a good one. You never know for sure what a horse is going to turn out like. We did well here tonight.”
Etbauer has his second competition here during the sixth performance on Wednesday. He is hoping for another successful ride to advance to Saturday night’s finals.
Another contestant that is keeping his momentum going is Kaycee Feild from Elk Ridge, Utah. Feild is coming off of a win at the College National Finals Rodeo in bareback riding. He competed there in Casper, Wyo., last week and left with the national title as a student at Utah Valley State College.
After a couple of days at home, he made the trip to Reno to get on Release Me from Big Bend Rodeo. An 83-point effort put him in a tie for first place in the first round. Tyson Thompson from Merrill, Ore., also has an 83.
Feild is currently 21st in the world standings. Over the summer he won’t have to worry about college classes so can focus on rodeo. A win here would certainly improve his position and help him keep his momentum going into the very lucrative Fourth of July where there are over 30 rodeos with huge amounts of prize money available.
Clayton Foltyn from El Campo, Texas, competed in the Xtreme Bulls event here last Thursday and left with over $13,000. He came back to compete at the rodeo Tuesday and did well again. He scored 90 points to tie for first place in bull riding. The bull riding is the only event with just one round of competition here. Foltyn will now be planning his trip back here Saturday night for the finals and increase his Reno prize money even more.
Attendance at the Tuesday night performance was near capacity at 8,129. Tickets for Friday and Saturday night are nearly sold out.
