Chris Harris was the top score of the night in the bareback riding at the 89th annual Reno Rodeo with a score of 82 points on Rosser Rodeo’s Bay Lady. Harris of Itasca, Texas, moved to second in the first round at the Reno Rodeo just days after returning from a special roughstock event in Calulo, Angolo, Africa. He and saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss returned victorious from Africa on Friday, June 20 and they both competed in Reno on Sunday night, June 22 turning in the highest scores in their respective events.

DeMoss of Heflin, La., rode Rosser Rodeo’s Hail Mary for 81 points to finish in a tie for the night with 2006 World Champion Chad Ferley of Oelrichs, S.D., who rode Flying U Rodeo’s Gold Coast Cal. They moved into a tie for third in the first round behind Anthony Bello with an 86 and Justin Arnold with an 85, turned in on opening night. Harris, DeMoss and Ferley will all return on Monday night for their second round horse and will look to be in the top 12 in the average to return for the final round on Saturday, June 28.

Local cowboy Sterling Joe Lambert of Fallon, Nev., had the quickest time on the night to get the second round of the steer wrestling underway. Lambert stopped the clock in 5.3 seconds and added to his first round time of 5.1, he moves into the lead in the average with a total time of 10.4 seconds on two head. His next closest competitor was Kyle Hughes of Olney Springs, Colo., who finished with a 6.6 second time.

Colby Schneemann of Big Lake, Texas, and Tommy Zuniga of Centerville, Texas, turned in the quick time on the night in the team roping stopping the clock in 6.4 seconds. Jake and Jim Ross Cooper of Monument, N.M., still lead the way with a time of 6.3 seconds.

2004 World Champion Tie-down roper Monty Lewis had the quick run on Sunday with a time of 9.4 seconds. Lewis of Hereford, Texas, currently holds the second spot in the first round behind Cade Swor of Chico, Texas, with a 9.1. The first round will conclude on Monday morning during slack, with the second round getting underway on Monday evening.

Jana Jarreau turned in the fastest time on Sunday night in the barrel racing with a time of 17.21 seconds. Jarreau of Greenwell Springs, La., moved into third in the second round but because of a long time in the first round, she will not be returning for the final round.

Bull rider Sonny Murphy missed the 2007 season due to a neck injury he sustained at the 2006 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but he showed he was back to top form on Sunday night in Reno. Murphy of Tremonton, Utah, scored 90 points on Flying U Rodeo’s Pretty Boy Floyd to move to the top of the leaderboard in the bull riding and guarantee himself a spot in the Finals on Saturday night. 2007 World Champion Wesley Silcox was the second highest mark on the night with an 87 on Flying U Rodeo’s Mr. Bond. Silcox of Payson, Utah, moved into second place behind Murphy and will be back for the final round.
