The University of Nevada women’s basketball team won its tenth straight game at home Saturday night, defeating Utah State 75-55. With the win, Nevada improved to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in the WAC while Utah State fell to 6-14 overall and 2-6 in the WAC.
Nevada made its first seven field goal attempts of the game and took a 16-6 lead over Utah State with 16:12 remaining in the half. The Pack extended its lead to 10 points on Bre'Anna Henry’s jumper with 9:36 left in the half. Nevada led by as many as 13 in the first half, going up 32-19 with 1:44 remaining on a jumper by Jennifer Gross.
Nevada shot 56.0 percent (14-of-25) from the floor in the first half while Utah State shot just 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from the field. Dellena Criner led Nevada with 13 points at the half.
Brandi Fitzgerald put Nevada up by 19 with 16:25 left in the game as the Pack took a 44-25 lead. The Aggies cut the Pack’s lead to eight on five occasions in the second half but Nevada used a 6-0 run to push its lead to 14 points, 60-46, with 7:47 remaining in the game. Nevada led by as many as 20 points twice in the game.
The Pack ended the game shooting a season-high 57.1 percent (28-of-49) from the floor. The Aggies finished the game shooting 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the floor.
Criner led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor. Criner also recorded five assists in the game and moved into sole possession of tenth place on Nevada’s all-time assist list with 200.
Cherlanda Franklin added 16 points, one off her career high of 17 points. Franklin also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
“It’s going to take a long time for the team and for me to forget our game at Fresno State on Thursday,” head coach Kim Gervasoni said. “We feel better but that game is always going to be our motivation. We played harder today, we played better defense and we got stops.”
Nevada will travel to San Jose, Calif. for a game against the Spartans on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Pack will then play at Hawai`i on Saturday at 9 p.m. PT.
