COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Aces starter Joe Martinez allowed just one unearned run into the eighth inning, and the bullpen followed suit Thursday night, as Reno earned a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Security Service Field.
Staked to an early three-run lead, the lone blemish to Martinez’s line came in the third inning when a two-out error extended the inning and led to a Colorado Springs run. As it would turn out, though, that was all the Sky Sox would get.
Martinez (8-5) earned the victory, scattering seven hits with seven strikeouts and just one walk over 7.2 innings of work. After his exit, Joe Paterson retired the only batter he faced in the eighth, and Jonathan Albaladejo slammed the door in the ninth.
The loss fell to Sky Sox starter Alex White (1-4), who surrendered four runs on six hits over five frames.
At the plate for Reno, Adam Eaton led-off the game with a home run and later doubled, finishing with two hits, a run scored and two RBIs. A.J. Pollock and Rusty Ryal added two-hit efforts for the Aces.
The series continues on Friday night. LHP Tyler Skaggs (1-0, 6.43 ERA) toes the slab for the Aces, while the Sky Sox will counter with LHP Nick Schmidt (0-1, 9.00 ERA). First pitch from Security Service Field is set for 6:05 p.m. PT.
