RENO, Nev.— Despite a pair of franchise records broken by Cody Ransom, Reno saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night in a 13-8 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies at Aces Ballpark.
Ransom hit his 26th home run—a three-run blast in the third inning—breaking the Aces single-season home run and RBI records in the process. Ransom's 26 home runs and 89 RBIs broke the previous records of 25 and 86, respectively, set last season by current Diamondbacks first baseman Brandon Allen.
David Winfree went 4-for-4 with three singles, a home run and two RBIs, helping Reno come back from an early deficit. The Aces came back from a 5-1 deficit, eventually tying the game at six when Collin Cowgill and Winfree hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. But Fresno would outscore the Aces 7-2 over the final four innings to take the third game of this four-game set and hand Reno its first loss since July 8 at Tacoma.
Aces starter Zach Kroenke (6-2) suffered the defeat, allowing eight runs—all earned—in 5.1 innings. Kroenke surrendered 14 hits, while striking out three and walking two.
The win went to Fresno starter Matt Yourkin (6-5), who gave up six runs in six innings. Dan Otero got the final four outs for the Grizzlies to earn his fifth save.
Cowgill picked up three hits—including his 13th home run—and scored three runs for Reno, while Tony Abreu singled and scored twice.
The Aces close out the homestand and look for a series victory Thursday night at Aces Ballpark. RHP Gaby Hernandez gets the nod for Reno, while the Grizzlies will counter with RHP Andrew Kown (9-6, 4.29 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
