Phoenix, Ariz.— The Reno Aces, in conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, announced today the D-backs selected the contract of right-hander Matt Stites from the Aces. In a corresponding move, outfielder Tony Campana was optioned to Reno.
Stites was transferred from Double-A Mobile to Reno on May 6, and was inserted into the closer role. In 17 games with the Aces, Stites had a 2.25 ERA (4 ER in 16 IP) and converted all 12 of his save opportunities. He did not allow an earned run until his 12th appearance with Reno.
The reliever has compiled many accolades since being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 17th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Missouri. Baseball America named him as the Best Reliever in the Texas League following the 2013 season. He was acquired by the D-backs in the trade that sent Ian Kennedy to San Diego on July 31, 2013. Entering the 2014 season, Baseball America ranked Stites as the No. 9 prospect in the Arizona organization.
Campana will be making his second stint with the Aces this season. From May 2 – June 12, he hit .286 (30-for-105) with 22 runs scored, 12 RBI, 2 doubles, 2 triples and 7 stolen bases. Campana delivered the game-winning hit last night for the Diamondbacks in a 4-3 win over Milwaukee at Chase Field.
