LAS VEGAS, Nev.— Mark Hallberg, Brandon Allen and Lucas May homered, and Gaby Hernandez dealt a quality start for Reno Monday night, leading the Aces to an 8-4 victory over the Las Vegas 51s in the series finale at Cashman Field.
The victory is Reno’s second straight and forces a series split with its intrastate rival.
The Aces plated two runs in the first, two more in the third and never trailed Monday. Las Vegas carved into an early deficit with runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but Hallberg and Allen gave the Aces plenty of insurance with home runs in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
Hernandez (2-0) earned his second-straight victory since joining the Aces rotation. The right-hander scattered three runs on eight hits over seven innings of work, walking three and striking out two in a 104-pitch effort. Out of the Reno bullpen, Alberto Castillo allowed a run in the eighth before Jordan Norberto finished the proceedings with a scoreless ninth.
The loss fell to 51s starter Scott Richmond (4-5), who surrendered five runs—four earned—over five innings of work. Richmond walked four and struck out four.
At the plate for Reno, Hallberg’s home run was his first of the season, while May’s blast was his first with Reno and fourth overall in 2011. Allen’s solo shot in the ninth marked his 11th of the season and franchise-best 48th all-time in an Aces uniform.
The Aces and 51s now head north to Reno to kick-off a new 4-game set at Aces Ballpark in the Silver State Diamond Challenge. In Tuesday’s series opener, RHP Barry Enright (5-2, 4.27 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while Las Vegas will counter with LHP Brad Mills (6-5, 3.04 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
