Aces Take 3 Of 4 From Tucson

RENO, Nev.— The Reno Aces jumped out to a 9-1 lead and held on for the victory Thursday night, defeating Tucson, 12-9, at Aces Ballpark, to take the first-ever series between the two franchises, three games to one.

Reno scored nine times in the first three innings, with Brandon Allen getting the Aces on the board with a two-run homer in the first. Cody Ransom added a two-run single in the second—one of his three hits on the night—before Tony Abreu broke the game open with a three-run double in the third.

The Padres clawed back, cutting the lead to 9-8 after a four-run sixth inning. But Reno answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and Lucas May added a two-run double in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Barry Enright (5-2) earned the win for Reno despite allowing seven runs in 5.1 innings. Jordan Norberto, Kam Mickolio and Yhency Brazoban combined to toss 3.2 innings of two-run relief to preserve the win.

Jon Leicester (3-3) took the loss for the Padres after surrendering nine runs on nine hits in three innings of work.

Ransom finished 3-for-4 with a pair or runs batted in, while Allen and Abreu had three RBIs apiece. Wily Mo Peña finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored before being lifted for a pinch-runner in the eighth.

The first-place Aces head to Las Vegas Friday for a four-game series against the 51s in the renewal of the Silver State Diamond Challenge. LHP Tom Layne (6-1, 4.91 ERA) gets the nod for the Aces. He will be opposed by 51s RHP Michael McDonald (3-3, 6.40 ERA) in the series opener, which is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
