RENO, Nev.—The Aces bullpen was dominant over the game’s final 4.1 frames Monday night, but a five-run Albuquerque fifth inning pushed the Isotopes to a 5-3 victory over Reno in the series finale at Aces Ballpark.
The Aces took an early 2-0 lead in the fourth, but Albuquerque answered with five runs to take its first lead of the game. The Isotopes wouldn’t get a run off Reno’s bullpen, but their lead would stand up. With the victory, Albuquerque handed Reno its first series loss at Aces Ballpark since early May.
Aces starter Joe Martinez (10-10) took the loss, surrendering five runs on 11 hits over 4.2 innings of work. After his exit, Sam Demel struck out six batters in 2.1 shutout innings, Mike DeMark worked a scoreless eighth, and Jensen Lewis dealt a spotless ninth.
The win went to Isotopes starter John Ely (12-7), who scattered two runs on three hits with six strikeouts over six innings of work. Erick Threets slammed the door in the ninth for his fourth save.
At the plate for Reno, Tyler Bortnick led the way with two hits and an RBI. Tyler Graham walked, scored and registered an outfield assist.
Reno now welcomes the Round Rock Express to Aces Ballpark for a four-game series. In Tuesday’s opener, LHP Tyler Skaggs (4-1, 1.70 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while the Express will counter with RHP Justin Grimm (1-1, 4.18 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
