Colorado Springs Doubles Up Aces 10-5

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Reno scored three times in the early going, but Colorado Springs answered with eight runs over the game’s first two innings, and the Sky Sox held on for a 10-5 victory over the Aces Thursday night at Security Service Field.

After loading the bases with nobody out in the first inning, a Jeff Bailey run-scoring force out and a two-run double for Yunesky Sanchez gave the Aces a quick 3-0 lead. But the advantage would be short-lived.

The Sky Sox managed to push across four runs in the home half of the first and four more in the second inning off Aces starter Kris Benson, who was making his third Major League rehabilitation start of the season. The two clubs would trade two-run frames later in the evening, as Colorado Springs took a 2-1 advantage in the four-game series.

Benson (1-2) surrendered eight earned runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts over 1.1 innings of work. Benson threw 70 pitches, 38 of them for strikeouts. The Reno bullpen gave a valiant effort Thursday night, as Luis Ayala, TJ Beam and Daniel Stange combined to hold the Sky Sox to just two runs over the game’s final 6.2 innings.

Colorado Springs starter Greg Smith lasted just 1.1 innings before being removed from the ballgame due to injury. Damian Moss (2-1) came on in relief and earned the victory, scattering two runs on four hits.

For the Aces at the plate, Cole Gillespie ran his hitting streak to 10 games, a new high for an Aces batter this season. Doug Deeds recorded two hits, his fifth-straight multi-hit effort.

The Aces and Sky Sox will play-out the finale of this four-game set on Friday night. RHP Matt Torra (3-3, 3.41 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Colorado Springs will trot-out RHP Huston Street (0-0, No ERA), who is pitching on a Major League rehabilitation assignment.
