Aces Swept by River Cats

RENO, Nev.— Cole Gillespie's towering three-run homer in the second gave Reno an early lead, but the Aces couldn't hold on, dropping the series finale to Sacramento 11-8 Monday afternoon at Aces Ballpark.

Down 1-0 in the second, the Aces put up five runs to take a commanding early lead. Gillespie's blast capped a five-run rally that began with a Sean Coughlin sacrifice fly and a Doug Deeds RBI-single to left. Reno would add three more in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead, but the River Cats would hit five home runs on the day to hand the Aces their first series sweep of the season and sixth-straight loss overall.

Wes Roemer started for Reno, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing seven runs. T.J. Beam pitched through the seventh, before Daniel Stange (4-2) took the loss for Reno, allowing four runs in two innings of relief.

Sam Demel (2-0) earned the win in relief for Sacramento, throwing a perfect two frames. Henry Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save of the season and second of the series.

Gillespie finished 1-for-3 with two walks for Reno, while Deeds was the only Ace to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 and raising his average to .305 for the season. The Aces drew 11 walks on the afternoon, in addition to six hits, but only went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Aces hit the road for a four-game set in Colorado Springs beginning Tuesday evening. Reno will send RHP Bryan Augenstein (2-6, 6.12 ERA) to the hill to face Colorado Springs RHP Alan Johnson (4-1, 2.15 ERA).
