RENO, Nev.—Ed Rogers turned a one-run deficit into a two-run lead with one swing of the bat in the seventh inning Friday night, and the Reno bullpen slammed the door on a 3-1 Aces series-opening victory over the Portland Beavers at PGE Park.
The Aces trailed 1-0 through six innings, before a Conor Jackson single and Ryan Roberts walk put two on with one out and Rogers at the plate. The Aces third baseman would deposit an 0-1 Josh Greer offering over the wall in left to put Reno ahead for the first time, 3-1. Carlos Rosa and T.J. Beam would come out of the Aces bullpen to hold Portland scoreless over the final 2.2 innings to preserve Reno’s fifth win in its last six games.
Aces starter Billy Buckner (3-1) earned his third-straight victory, scattering a run on seven hits over 6.1 innings pitched. Buckner walked two and struck out three batters.
The loss fell to Greer (0-3), who kept Reno silent until Rogers’ decisive blast in the seventh.
Rogers and Doug Deeds each contributed two hits for the Aces on Friday night.
The series continues Saturday night, with Aces RHP Kevin Mulvey (0-1, 4.05 ERA) facing Portland RHP Cesar Carrillo (1-2, 3.24 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from PGE Park in Portland, and all the action can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1450 AM or by visiting www.RenoAces.com.
