Qualls made a successful 2009 transition from one of the best setup men in the major leagues to one of the best closers, but he missed the final five weeks of the season after suffering a dislocated left kneecap Aug. 30.
When excess scar tissue formed following September surgery, Arizona orthopedist knocked Qualls out and removed the tissue with a bear hug. Hey, it worked.
