RENO, Nev.— Brandon Allen, who spent parts of the 2009 season with the Reno Aces and Arizona Diamondbacks, has been selected to participate in the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Stars Showcase Saturday night.
Fifty of the best young players in baseball were chosen to play in this year’s showcase, which will be played Saturday, Nov. 7, at 5:15 p.m. PT in Surprise, Ari. For the first time, the game will air on the MLB Network, with the D-backs’ own Daron Sutton providing play-by-play. Tony Clark, who made a Major League rehabilitation appearance in Reno last season, will provide color commentary.
Allen, a 6-2, 235-pound first baseman, has played in 20 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions, collecting 10 RBIs in only 74 at-bats. In just 38 games with the Aces in 2009, Allen hit .324 with 12 HR and 32 RBIs. He made his Major League debut on Aug. 22 after being recalled by Arizona earlier that day.
Allen joins Stephen Strasburg, the number one overall pick in the 2009 draft, on the East Division roster. Six first-round draft picks will appear in this year’s contest, including five of the first 10 overall picks.
Other Aces playing in the Arizona Fall League this year include OF Cole Gillespie, LHP Scott Maine, RHP Bryan Augenstein and RHP Cesar Valdez. Gillespie has shined during his first season in the AFL, batting .333 with four extra-base hits and two stolen bases through 13 games.
