RENO, Nev.— Travis Blackley and Trent Oeltjen—the Aces’ two Australian-born players—starred in Reno’s 6-5 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers Saturday night in front of 8,510 fans at Aces Ballpark.
Oeltjen fell just a double short of the cycle, leading Reno’s offense with a three-hit performance, including a three-run home run that capped a five-run second inning for the Aces. Trailing 4-1 in the second, John Hester smacked an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2. After Rusty Ryal scored on an Abraham Nunez fielder’s choice, Oeltjen put the Aces ahead for good with his three-run blast to right.
After Reno starter Cesar Valdez threw the first four innings, Blackley (2-3) entered the game and was masterful for 3.2 innings, allowing only one hit while striking out four. Jason Urquidez recorded one out in the eighth, which paved the way for Aces closer Bobby Korecky to earn his 11th save in 12 chances.
Tacoma starter Andrew Baldwin (5-5) was tacked with the loss, allowing five earned runs and nine hits over 7.2 innings of work.
The Aces and Rainiers continue their four-game series Sunday evening at Aces Ballpark. Reno sends RHP Tony Barnette (6-6, 5.83 ERA) to the hill against Tacoma RHP Eric Hull (6-3, 4.85). Sunday’s game is a Fox 11 Family Sunday, with the popular ZOOperstars! in attendance to entertain the crowd. Also, Sunday is Singles Night at Aces Ballpark. For $30, singles gain attendance to a mixer on the Plaza Overlook and two drink tickets. First pitch is set for 5:05 pm.
