The first roster in Reno Aces franchise history was released today by the club’s parent team, the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Aces officially report to Reno on Monday and open the season on the road April 9 against the Salt Lake Bees.
The 2009 club features six players that spent part of the 2008 season in the Major Leagues. That list includes Josh Whitesell, who is the reigning Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year. Whitesell batted .328 with 26 home runs and 110 RBI for Triple-A Tucson last season.
Also slated for the Aces infield is Ruben Gotay, who played 88 games for the Atlanta Braves last season.
The Reno outfield includes Alex Romero, a Venezuelan switch-hitter who played in 78 games for the D-backs last season. Also in the outfield is Trent Oeltjen who batted .317 in Tucson in 2008, Chris Roberson who had 20 stolen bases for Triple-A Norfolk a year ago, and Brandon Watson who hit .305 for Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season.
Behind the plate, duties will be shared between Luke Carlin, who caught Greg Maddux’s 350th career win last season, and prospect John Hester, who played last season at Double-A Mobile.
The pitching staff features the last two Diamondbacks’ Minor League pitchers of the year in Cesar Valdez (2008) and Esmerling Vasquez (2007). Also on the mound is former first-round pick Seth Etherton and Bobby Korecky, who went 2-0 in 16 appearances for the Minnesota Twins a year ago.
After an eight-game road swing to Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs, Reno returns home on April 17 for the much-anticipated debut of Aces Ballpark. The team’s first homestand lasts eight games, and is highlighted by a slew of promotional giveways.
Single-game tickets went on-sale Saturday morning. Tickets for the April 17 home opener have sold out, but seats remain available for the remainder of Opening Weekend at Aces Ballpark.
There is still time to book a group event at Aces Ballpark or get a season ticket package, available in full-season, half-season and quarter-season installments. Single-game tickets go on-sale April 4. Call (775) 334-4700 or visit RenoAces.com for more information.
