LAS VEGAS (AP) - Civil rights groups in Las Vegas are protesting
a U.S. Department of Justice decision not to launch a probe of Las
Vegas Metropolitan Police Department use of deadly force policies,
at least until the department takes part in an alternative best
practices review.
American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada and National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People officials say the
alternate review under the Justice Department's Community Oriented
Policing Services program won't have adequate teeth or enforcement
powers.
The ACLU and NAACP say it doesn't take a "best practices"
review to know that police shouldn't shoot and kill an unarmed
disabled military veteran in his car or an unarmed man in his
bathroom.
The Justice Department has authority to investigate possible
civil rights violations by police departments.
